Makeup Storage & Organization

I never did get around to a Let's Play last week, and I do apologize for that, but family life has been a little... insane. I'll try to get one done this week, especially because I do have a lot of crap to post.

A few weeks ago I realized I was quickly outgrowing my little makeup set-up, and with mom in tow took a trip to the Container Store to see what I could do about expanding my storage. I'm pretty pleased with what I have going on now, so I decided to take some pictures while I sorted everything. Forgive the flash in some of the photos, it was nighttime by the time we got home and I didn't want to wait to set everything up :3 I hope this helps others looking to organize their makeup!

I know, not a huge difference at first glance, but you'll see how awful it looked.

So organized, amirite? In an effort to separate my lipsticks I actually taped pieces of cardboard into the drawer... apparently lipstick tubes are stronger than cardboard.

I did have a nifty little system going where I converted my pressed powders into pigments and stored them in 5 gram jars so they were stackable in the drawer, but the more I bought, the less convenient that was. It got to the point that I couldn't see anything without having to pile everything off.

Storing your brushes in a vase with those fake glass bead thingies is nothing new, but I seriously needed to sort this stuff out. All my eyeliners and mascara were really cramped in the second glass case.

My lifesavers! The Container Store had these really awesome colored drawers (they also had blue, clear, black, and green) that are super big and deep. They actually had quite a bit of items designed specifically for makeup storage, but I didn't find it useful for someone who has a bigger collection. The only exception are the clear lipstick cases I got (as you can see, I purchased two) which are AWESOME. The little white bins were in the kitchen section, I'm guessing to sort out utensils and small bits and bobs in your drawers, but I found other uses for them. Lastly, that white/multi-colored design container with the green interior is actually from their dorm room desk collection. A lot of people, myself included, suggest using pen and pencil desk organizers as a great way to store brushes and/or eye pencils. You'll see what I used it for :) The one I have has four compartments; two long ones and two short ones.

Let the organizing begin!

I moved all the makeup from the three drawers in the purple container into the three big drawers. There is lots of extra room left in these drawers, and for good reason. You always want some room to grow.

Drawer number one is now filled with lipsticks in an upright position so they are tons easier to locate. I'm thinking about making an index card with swatches (I'd coat it with something like nail polish so it doesn't smudge) so I can still see what color they are without having to pick each one up and open it. To make things easier for now, I have them separated by color. All the glosses that won't fit into the lipstick container are shoved in the back since I rarely use them anyway P:

Drawer number two has all my eyeshadows, sorted into the longer separators I bought from the kitchen supplies section. The top layer (in the first photo on the right, since you can't tell which one is higher) has my overflow from the bottom drawer, plus my quads and sample baggies. With that layer removed, I have the all my 5 gram jars sorted by color on the right, and all my oddly shaped palettes/jars on the left. My Beauty from the Earth palette is on the left next to the separators, but I have since moved it into another drawer with my Book of Shadows palette.

My last drawer is the "let's toss crap in here" drawer. The separator to the left has all my eye brow care stuff (sealer, eyebrow shaping stencils, tons of different razors), the bin just above it has my sharpener and some like... "swiss army nail kit" LOL it has nail clippers, little scissors, and a filing thing. I think I got it at Claire's. The longest bin has a variety of crap, eyeliner and lip liner refills, eyeshadow applicators, wedges, etc. Off to the side of that bin are just a few hand mirrors I have.

I hate throwing out things, even if I feel like there's not a use for them. Thankfully, there is still a use for my old makeup container. The first drawer has all my blushes and eyebrow shadows (I know, it's pitifully empty), the second drawer has palettes, and the third drawer has nail stuff (not pictured, I forgot).

And here's what the new set-up looks like all together. The lower drawers are harder to reach, but that's why I put stuff I rarely use in the bottom one.

The pencil container ended up being a lot more useful than I thought it would be. The front rows have my eyeliners, jumbo pencils, and mascara. The divider separates the mascara from the liners. The back row has my spa wrap thing (I got it from Glitzy Glam) that I use to put on makeup, and a hand towel I change out every week. This freed up the square glass container that I put all my face, blush, and bronzer brushes into, so there's more room for my eyeshadow brushes in the other vase.

A few years ago my mom got me some of the Harajuku perfumes for Christmas. This is the box they came in. There was no way I could throw this beauty out, so I had to find a use for it. Fortunately, I'm the queen of organizing things into boxes that they were not meant to be used for. It's a relatively small kingdom (:

I used to have all this stuff dumped in there, but the square box fit in nicely and helps separate my concealers and eye primers from all my foundations.

And that's it! Hope you enjoyed.
